The humanitarian and development sectors are rapidly evolving with the integration of digital tools, artificial intelligence (AI), and innovative practices. IRL is at the forefront of researching how these technologies can be responsibly and effectively leveraged to improve outcomes. We examine applications of AI in early warning systems, predictive analytics for crisis response, digital financial inclusion, and the use of big data for monitoring development indicators. At the same time, our research critically assesses the risks and ethical considerations—such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the digital divide—that must be addressed to ensure inclusive innovation. By connecting academic expertise with field-based realities, IRL helps organizations understand the opportunities and limitations of AI-driven solutions. Our goal is to support humanitarian and development actors in adopting technology that enhances impact, improves accountability, and empowers communities, while safeguarding ethical standards and human rights.
